Here are 5 things you may have missed during the pilot episode, “Sundown”

On Sunday August 16th television audiences were introduced to Atticus, Leti and George, the heroes of the new HBO Horror series, Lovecraft Country. This groundbreaking show, which is based on a Matt Ruff novel of the same name, is helmed by Misha Green, Jordan Peele and JJ Abrams, three cinematic juggernauts. The storyline craftfully blends genres and plays on tropes in ways that leave you questioning.

After devouring the pilot I plunged right into to ’Lovecraft Country Radio’, the HBO produced podcastThe writers and producers of this show packed a wealth details and history that lends itself to rewatching so here are some things to look out for when you go back for rounds 2 and 3 and so on:
A Princess of Mars
The series opens with an elaborate dream sequence, complete with firey explosions, alien invasions, and a Cthulu. Fans of the infamous H. P. Lovecraft, to whom the title alludes, may find some familiarty in the bizarre scene aside from Jackie Robinson the demon slayer. When the UFO appears a red alien woman emerges and floats down to Earth which is a reference to the famous novel ”A Princess of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This foreshadows a conversation he has with a fellow bus passenger after he wakes up from his nap.
